Welcome back to Classic Game Room HD. This is Mark from Classic Game Room, and this is the relaxed version of Classic Game Room HD. Today we’re going back about twenty or thirty years into video gaming history to look at Zaxxon for the Atari 2600.

I grew up with Atari. I had the wood‑grained Atari 2600, the Atari 2600 Jr., and the Atari 7800, which is what I’m using to capture this footage. Zaxxon was one of those games that always stood out to me as a kid because it looked futuristic. It had that three‑dimensional look to it, or at least what passed for 3D back then. It was different from Space Invaders and Pac‑Man. It felt like you were flying through space, dodging walls, shooting robots, and navigating this pseudo‑3D environment.

The arcade version of Zaxxon was a big deal. It had that isometric perspective where you flew left to right, up and down, and it felt like you were actually moving through a space fortress. When they brought Zaxxon home to the Atari 2600, they tried to recreate that experience, but the 2600 just wasn’t built for it. The left‑to‑right pseudo‑3D side scroll is gone. What you get instead is something like a vertical shooter mixed with a failed attempt at three‑dimensional gameplay.

You can’t really tell where the enemies are. You can’t judge altitude. You can’t tell if you’re going to hit something or fly over it. It’s like the game is constantly lying to you about where anything actually is. So the gameplay suffers. You’re basically guessing the whole time.

I give the Atari 2600 version of Zaxxon an A for effort but a D minus for execution. It’s a valiant effort. They tried. But unless you’re a hardcore collector or a Zaxxon completist, you don’t really need this one in your collection.

The Zaxxon title and letterhead are great, though. They had a great logo. It’s the kind of logo you could put on the hood of your car.
