Tell me, what do you think which games from the 16-bit era have graphics you totally adore? Like “This is the best graphic i’ve seen”, or some personal preference because of reasons.

I will start: I totally adore the graphics of Assaul Suits Valken/ Cybernator.
I love the detail and the artstyle of the graphic itself.

Street Fighter Alpha 2 on SNES. Somehow, they managed to get some of the best graphics at the tail end of the systems’ life… mimicking that of the Arcades and PS1/Saturn. Very nice muted, but vibrant, color scheme.

Well my experience with 16-bit is very limited but from what I’ve been exposed to, the game from my collection I’m most impressed with is Lightening Force: Quest for the Darkstar: the visuals in some of the backgrounds are highly palatable and being able to move up and down past the screen borders only enhances that sense of depth.

Sonic 3 and Super Hang-On take close runner ups.

Super Turrican 2: despite the levels are all repetitive, the graphics and the music make me feel like I was playing a superior console like Sega Saturn or PlayStation, and it has some nice 3D cutscenes too.

Same as Yoshi’s Island except the levels are huge and there’s no time limit.

Ok, what follows is NOT a list of the “best graphics on the ‘x'” console, but merely my personal favorites.

On the Sega Genesis, I would say (* Not * in order of preference):

    º Comix Zone
    º Gunstar Heroes
    º Sonic the Hedgehog 3
    º Vectorman
    º Earthworm Jim
º Adventures of Batman & Robin
    º Disney’s Aladdin

On the Super Nintendo, I would say:

    º Super Mario World 2: Yoshi’s Island
    º Donkey Kong Country 2
    º Star Fox
    º Super Mario Kart
    º Axelay
º Super Mario RPG: Legend of the Seven Stars
    º Super Metroid
    º Mega Man X3

I’m surely missing a few, but those are the ones that immediately came to mind.

My all time favorite 16 bit sprite work is in Streets of Rage 3. Somehow the people at Sega managed to perfectly translate the character designs from paper to pixels using only 16 bit hardware; the art direction really shines through, which is amazing considering the technology they were working with. I love the amount of detail in those sprites, very impressive for a Genesis game.

    Hah! Damn straight.
Not even Axelay with its extensive use of Mode 7 could match it.

I remember the 16bit game that really wowed me the most was Super Castlevania IV because the graphics seemed like such a big step up from the NES and the music was so crisp and luscious and dammit now I gotta go find the Castlevania IV soundtrack on Youtube.

Here’s some footage for the latter 3 since they’re typically only well known to Genesis enthusiasts

Ai Cho Aniki for the PC Engine obviously:

I mean c’mon it even has men jumping off a moving train and perfectly landing on a trampoline before rolling off the screen in fetal position!.

    /\ Legit answer.

I actually have a really hard time telling, there are so many great looking 16 games… I guess I’ll go with Magical Pop’n. That game is so gorgeous!

When I first played Star Fox my mind was absolutely blown. 3D polygons on a 16-bit console! It’s difficult for young people who don’t have that perspective (having grown up with PS1 and later consoles) to appreciate just how revolutionary it’s graphics were.
