CGR's On This Day In Gaming - BAN DAI WONDERSWAN March 4, 1999
Classic Game Room presents CGR’s ON THIS DAY IN GAMING! On March 4, 1999, the WonderSwan released in Japan. This handheld would come to market at a time when Nintendo’s supremacy in shares was coming to an end and competitors began to battle the Game Boy for the handheld turf. Like Sega’s Game Gear and the Neo Geo Pocket Color, Gunpei Yokoi’s WonderSwan enjoyed a measure of success in Japan, mainly due to Square’s agreement to port early iterations of Final Fantasy onto the portable machine. However, after a few years, with the arrival of the Game Boy Advance and reconciliation between Nintendo and Square, the WonderSwan became discontinued in 2003.
